The Traveller (A Winters Night)

Trudging through the knee deep snow,
looking up at the stars twinkling in the night sky.
Thoughts of life come to him.
Thoughts of where he had been, where he was heading.
The importance of this journey,
the knowledge weighing heavy on his mind.

Boots sinking deep within the drift,
snow crunching and crumbling as he trod.
The bright moon lifts itself into the sky,
obscuring the palest stars from view.
Silver light casting long shadows
over the pristine landscape all around.

The silence of the winters night
offering accompaniment to his thoughts.
Lives lived and lost in the blink of an eye,
people met and forgotten even quicker!
We all travel alone within our thoughts,
the cold seeps in if we let it.

Smoke rises on the horizon,
an hours walk to the warmth of a fire.
Voices to warm ears, food to fill belly.
Sanctuary found for another night,
resting in the comfort of a heavy eiderdown,
sleep finally comes to the weary traveller.
